PARENTING PROGRAMS

Parenting Workshops are designed to encourage, empower, and offer support to parents and caregivers while they are learning new skills that will encourage life-long learning, enhance parent-child relationships, and foster a family atmosphere of love and respect. 

Infant Programs (0-12 months)

Certified Infant Massage Instructors build on the importance of attachment through the facilitation of stimulating forms of touch that nourish the relationship between the parent and child. Massage enhances an infant’s feelings of warmth, relaxation, security, comfort and it leads to a healthier, happier childhood and adulthood. 

Certified staff in the Rainbow Kids Yoga and Power Vinyasa Yoga facilitate the Parent and Baby Yoga which nurtures and strengthens your body and your relationship with your baby through gentle techniques for calmness, happiness and mother-child bonding. 

parentingConnecting with Your Baby Workshop provides practical tips for parents and simple messages on the topic of parent-child attachment. 

Children See Children Learn is a workshop for parents of children ages 0-6. Parents view and discuss eight short clips which share positive discipline methods from experts. Positive discipline helps children understand what is important through strategies that are appropriate to their developmental levels. Parents learn the link between their children’s developmental needs and typical behaviors of their child’s age group.

One to One Triple P provides guidance that is tailored to deal with specific problems. This is a very brief and private way for parents to get Triple P support.  You (and/or your partner) meet with a Triple P Practitioner to discuss what might be causing your child to behave this way and work out what changes you would like to see in your child’s behaviour.  Infant Tip Sheets Include:  Crying, Promoting Development, Separation Anxiety, Sleep Patterns

Toddler Programs (1 to 2 years of age)

Certified staff in the Rainbow Kids Yoga and Power Vinyasa Yoga facilitate Parent and Toddler Yoga, which provides fun, developmentally appropriate yoga with postures, games, rhymes and songs for toddlers to do with their parents or caregivers.  Being physically active and having a positive attitude toward physical activity affects lifelong quality of life: good physical health, positive mental health, and beneficial social relationships. 

One to One Triple P provides guidance that is tailored to deal with specific problems. This is a very brief and private way for parents to get Triple P support.  You (and/or your partner) meet with a Triple P Practitioner to discuss what might be causing your child to behave this way and work out what changes you would like to see in your child’s behaviour.  Toddler Tip Sheets Include:  Bedtime Problems, Disobedience , Hurting Others, Independent Eating, Language, Sharing, Tantrums, Toilet Training, Wandering, Whining

Preschool Programs (3 to 5 years of age)

During the Backpack Adventures program, parents and children explore the 5 domains of school readiness.  Families discover new information and activities to support their child’s journey into school.  Each session introduces a new domain and families get to borrow a backpack full of fun activities to practice each new skill at home.

parentsTrained leaders facilitate the Family Math interactive sessions, where parents and their children are actively involved in activities that reinforce skills and the understanding of math concepts, to enhance children’s success upon entry into kindergarten.

Based on extensive research and practice in the area of emergent literacy, trained leaders in the Family Literacy In Action program supports families in developing early literacy skills with their young child. Each session focuses on a different aspect of early childhood literacy development and features story time, action rhymes, songs and finger plays aimed at developing oral language skills along with engaging child-focused activities.

Empathy Belly is a hands-on tool to help pre-teens make healthy choices related to pregnancy and parenting.

Dove Real Beauty Workshop is an educational and interactive workshop for young girls ages 6 to 12 and their adult female mentors; mothers, relatives, and friends.

parenting photoTriple P is for ALL PARENTS!  Triple P – Positive Parenting Program knows all parents have different needs.  That’s why Triple P offers a range of ways for you to get your parenting help.  You can choose anything from a one to one session with a practitioner or a seminar series.  You can choose what best suits your family!

Child Care Algoma certified Practitioners in the Triple P Positive Parenting Program help to create a positive, caring relationship between children and families with easy to use tips and new ideas that help build confidence and new parenting skills in developing positive relationships; encouraging desirable behaviour; teaching children new behaviours and skills; and managing misbehaviour. 

Triple P has a range of ways to deliver positive parenting, from single visit consultations to public seminars, group courses and private sessions.  Triple P helps parents to build a positive relationship with your children, encourage behaviour you like, teach children new skills, set rules and give instructions that your children will follow, respond to misbehaviour immediately, consistently and decisively, use discipline strategies that work and to take care of yourself as a parent.

One to One Stepping Stones Triple P has been developed for parents of children with a developmental disability.  It is a series of brief sessions with a trained practitioner.

Triple P Selected Seminar Series – An introduction to the strategies of positive parenting and Triple P. Parents attend any number of three 90-minute seminars (Power of Positive Parenting; Raising Confident, Competent Children; and Raising Resilient Children). Take-home tip sheets are given to all parents who attend Triple P seminars. The Power of Positive Parenting Seminar Series for parents of children up to 10 years old.  

Triple P helps you understand how your family works so you can use the things you already think, feel, say and do in new ways.  Triple P helps you:

*Create a happier family environment

*Teach your child/teen the skills they need to get along with others

*Deal positively, consistently and decisively with problem behaviour should it arise

*Encourage behaviour you like

*Develop realistic expectations of your child/teen and yourself

*Take care of yourself as a parent.

How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk program offers supportive skills that help parents respond effectively to their children.  Parents are introduced to proven skills that help to cope with a child's negative feelings, engage a child's willing cooperation, discipline without hurting or alienating, help a child develop a positive and realistic self- image and foster a family atmosphere of love and respect.

The Nobody’s Perfect program is for parents of children birth to 5 years of age. Meet with other parents of young children share questions, concerns and ideas, about being a parent; learn about child development, safety, feelings, health and behaviour; discuss real life parenting situations, work together with the support of a trained facilitator; discover positive ways of parenting. Father specific resources are available as well.

Parenting Programs for Central Algoma

Community Crockpot Kitchens:

Community Kitchens offers families the opportunity to learn how to make nutritious meals that will save time and money. While enjoying a delicious crockpot supper parents will have the opportunity to discuss such topics as food safety, healthy meal menus choices, family budgeting and dealing with the picky eater. Following supper families will prepare a meal to take home and enjoy. Crockpots will be provided to those families who do not have one. Older children are encouraged to participate in the cooking experience. Childminding is provided for younger children upon request.
